Shaker Hill Bakery & Catering
our bakery is currently open Thursday-Sunday, 10 am to 3 pm.
Our seasonal bakery and year-round catering services generate revenue for York County Shelter Programs.
Shaker Hill Bakery & Catering is on our campus atop Shaker Hill in Alfred. It’s easy to find - Shaker Hill Road is connected on both ends to Route 4 in Alfred. Watch for signs for the bakery or York County Shelter Programs.
The bakery has a long history. It was at one time known as the Bakery at Notre Dame and was owned and operated for many years by The Brothers of Christian Instruction, our neighbors on Shaker Hill. When York County Shelter Programs opened its doors in 1979, it was in the former county jail on Route 111 in Alfred. In the early 1980s, the Executive Director, Don Gean, began to purchase bread for the shelter residents from the Brothers. This led to the Brothers enabling YCSP to move into better quarters when they leased buildings to us that they were no longer using. And over time, YCSP took over management of the bakery.
The bakery also became a place of job training skills for many shelter residents. It is open seasonally, from late May through the Christmas season. Besides the breads, pies and pastries it is well known for, it also offers specialty items such as chicken pot pie, pork pie, salmon pie and baked beans.
The hours change throughout the season. It is open Thursday-Sunday, 10 AM to 3 PM in May, and seven days a week starting in June, through Thanksgiving. The hours then revert to Thursday-Sunday through Christmas.
